What is fibre cement cladding?

Fibre cement cladding is a durable building material primarily used on a building’s exterior. It is a low-cost building option when building homes or other buildings, and is an alternative to wood or vinyl cladding. It can come pre-painted, but is also able to be painted or stained after the fact.

It was developed in the early 1900s and originally, asbestos was used to reinforce the material in fibre cement cladding, but due to its health risks, it was modernised to use cellulose fibres instead. This modernisation happened in the 1980s, and the material is now made of a combination of cellulose fibres, cement, sand, and wood.

With a low price tag, you wouldn’t expect the benefits that also come with using fibre cement cladding for building. It is also non-combustible, water-resistant, impact-resistant, and will not rot or warp with weather and sun exposure. It also has an aesthetic appeal, as it looks much more expensive than it is.

Durability

Fibre cement cladding is quite a durable product, as very little affects it. Once installed, it will require very little maintenance. It may require some paint coverage every once in a while, but this is due to the durability of the paint used, not the fibre cement cladding itself.

As it is resistant to water, it will not rot, and it will not warp or crack in direct sunlight. Also, due to the fact that it is made primarily of cement and cellulose fibres, it is not attractive to pests, including but not limited to termites and woodpeckers.

Fire Safety

Fire thrives on wood, plastic, anything it can melt or burn. One thing it cannot do, at least under normal circumstances, is burn through cement. The fibre cement material in the cladding is non-combustible, and so it will not burn like wood or uPVC cladding.

While you should always evacuate in case of a fire, fibre cement cladding is designed to help ensure the minimum amount of damage is done to your home’s structure. Fire-prone areas often rely on fibre cement cladding in order to ensure the homes are not engulfed and can be salvaged after forest fires.

Fibre cement cladding companies put out regular fire safety reports, to keep up to date with safety regulations, as well as to reassure customers of their viability.

Eco Friendly

Thanks to its materials and creation process, fibre cement siding is also eco-friendly. When creating fibre cement, the water shuffled through the material is constantly recycled and reused, instead of being run off into the oceans. This is one of the main contributors to its environmental impact.

The materials used are also sustainable, raw, and recycled, and will have a lower ecological footprint than many other products.

Compared with plastic, vinyl, or any other cladding, fibre cement’s durability also contributes to it’s ecological footprint. It is designed to last over 50 years, and so will also not need to be replaced as often. As such, fewer materials will end up in landfills.
