How to Paint Fibre Cement Cladding

It is becoming more popular for town homes and houses to be built with fibre cement cladding. This is due to the material being dense and durable since it is a mixture of cement, fibre, and sand. It is also resistant to pesky termites, water, and isn’t combustible. The surface also makes a great base for exterior paint.

Fibre cement cladding really could not be any easier to work with. All you need to do is pick your paint colour and get your tools together. The process is incredibly easy and is one that you should be able to do yourself.

Fibre cement cladding really could not be any easier to work with. All you need to do is pick your paint colour and get your tools together. The process is incredibly easy and is one that you should be able to do yourself.

Timing Matters

Fibre cement cladding is super low maintenance, so it doesn’t require constant painting to stay nice. If you purchase unfinished fibre cement, you will need to paint it shortly after installation. After that, unless you want to change the colour, the material will require a new paint job after about 10 years.

Check for Cracks

Before you paint your fibre cement cladding, check it for any potential cracks or openings that need to be sealed. The best option is an acrylic caulk. Fill in any cracks or holes according to the instructions and let the caulk dry.

Clean the Cladding

If you notice any mould or mildew on the surface of the fibre cement, you will need to take care of this first. Mix up three parts water and one part bleach to kill the mould or mildew. Apply this solution to the area and leave it to soak for 20 minutes before thoroughly rinsing.

You will then need to use a power-washer to spray down the whole surface. This will get rid of any dust, dirt, or debris stuck to the surface. You can use just water or add a cleaning solution to the power-washer. If you use a cleaning solution, you will need to rinse well after.

If you notice that there are any areas that are chipping, you will want to take care of this before priming and painting. Chipping paint can impact the adhesion of your new paint, so carefully scrape it off and sand it to make the surface smooth.

Prime the Surface

Using a primer will ensure that the paint sticks to the fibre cement and doesn’t peel off the surface in the future. It also helps create a smooth surface and covers any pores that might be in the fibre cement. Apply at least one coat of a primer before painting.

Apply the Paint

After you have the fibre cement cladding clean and primed, you can begin painting. You can apply the paint with a paintbrush, paint roller, or paint sprayer. You will want to use a paintbrush to paint corners and any trim near the top and bottom of the cladding. You can use a paintbrush for the whole surface or make it easier with a paint roller.

When to Hire Professional Help

While it is possible to paint fibre cement cladding yourself, there are some situations where it might be worth it to hire a professional. The main reason you want to use a professional is if you just don’t have the time to complete the project on your own.
