Can You Paint Fibre Cement Cladding?

If you chose a pre-coloured fibre cement cladding, but you changed your mind and aren’t a fan of it anymore, you are probably wondering if you can paint it. There is a high chance that at some point you are going to want to change the colour of your house, and luckily you can with fibre cement.

Prepare for Painting

The first thing you will need to do is prepare your fibre cement for painting. You are going to want to check for any potential cracks in the surface and seal them with an acrylic caulk. It isn’t likely that you will notice any cracks, but the material isn’t invincible, so it is better to check first than be sorry later.

Give the caulk time to dry before you start cleaning the cladding. If there is just dirt and dust, you can rinse it with a water hose or pressure washer and wipe any spots off with a clean cloth. If you happen to notice any mildew or mould growing on the surface, you can take care of it with a bleach mixture of three parts water to one part bleach.

Let this mixture sit on the mouldy spot for at least 20 minutes before you rinse it. Make sure you get all of the bleach mixture off the surface and give the wall plenty of time to dry. If you try to paint on the wet surface, there is a high potential that the paint won’t stick.

Prime Before Painting

To make your paint job last longer and resist cracking, peeling, or chipping, you will want to apply a primer before you start painting. The primer will also fill any pores that might be on the surface of the fibre cement cladding, giving you a smooth surface to work with.

You should apply at least one coat of primer before adding the paint, but you can add more coats if you feel like the surface needs it. Make sure you leave the primer to dry for a few hours before returning to paint it.

Paint the Surface

When the primer is dry, you can begin painting. It is recommended that you use a paintbrush and a roller brush to complete the job. You can use the paintbrush to outline any areas like corners and trim around the top and bottom of the cladding.

You can then use a roller brush to cover larger surfaces at one time. This will save you time and make the painting process much easier than if you were to use a regular paintbrush for the entire job.

There is also the option of using a paint sprayer to apply the paint to the surface. You can usually rent these from a hardware store, so check with your local store to see if this is an option. This will significantly cut down the amount of time it takes to complete your painting project.

When to Hire Help

Painting fibre cement cladding is a process that can take up several days of your time. If you don’t have the extra time to spare, you might benefit from hiring someone to help you and get the job done.
