What is Porcelain Used for?

When you hear the word porcelain, your mind probably goes straight to fine dining China or the dolls that your grandma has on display. However, porcelain has many more uses than what we originally consider.

What is Porcelain?

Porcelain is a ceramic material. It is incredibly durable, strong, non-porous, and resistant to chemicals. It was first discovered in 618 AD, but it took quite some time before it started to be used for building and other uses. This is because it needs to be made at very high temperatures.

In general, porcelain needs to be made at temperatures ranging between 2,200- and 2,650-degrees Fahrenheit. These temperatures were much harder to reach when porcelain was discovered, so it wasn’t used as often as today.

What Can Porcelain Be Used for?

Porcelain has several different uses from building materials to art. The most modern and highly sought after today is in the construction industry where it can be used as lightweight high performance cladding, which requires little to no maintenance, and lasts for for a very long timer.

Here are some other uses….

Building Materials

Porcelain is mostly used in the form of tile when it is being used by builders. There are two different types of porcelain that will be used to make tile called glazed and through-bodied. Glazed porcelain is covered with a glaze as a finish that adds a design or colour to the tile.

Through-bodied porcelain doesn’t have the glaze on top and instead has colour throughout. This type of porcelain is generally used for flooring, walls, back-splashes, and countertops because there isn’t a need to worry about the glaze rubbing off.

Bathroom

Porcelain is also used for bathroom flooring and other applications. This is because it doesn’t absorb water and it doesn’t rust. You will notice that most sinks and toilets are made out of porcelain for this exact reason.

Another reason porcelain is used in the bathroom is the bacteria and stain resistant qualities. You don’t have to worry about anything staining the floor of your bathroom or bacteria growing on the surface.
Insulation

Porcelain is resistant to thermal shock, making it a great insulation for high electric voltage. Electrical engineers will use porcelain on high-voltage cables and antennas to reduce the chance of electrical problems.
It is said that porcelain and other ceramic materials are essential for the functioning of TVs, cars, computers, smartphones, and more. It is used to protect the electrical components and keep everything safe and where it should be.

Art

In addition to being used for practical reasons, porcelain can also be used as an art material. Porcelain has been used by artists for years to make vases, bowls, sculptures, and many more types of art.

Take for example the porcelain dolls that were mentioned earlier. These were extremely common in 19thcentury Europe and are now considered valuable pieces of art history and cultural history in European countries.

Painted pottery made from porcelain was also popular in Europe as well as Asia. The painting would take place after the porcelain was fired because the temperatures wouldn’t need to be as high. This makes porcelain pottery stand out against other types of painted pottery because they are all painted before firing.
