How to Repair Porcelain Cladding

There can be many reasons why you could need to repair porcelain cladding. Either your tiles have started to crack or there is a chip in them that needs to be fixed and sorted out. In any case not only do problems like these cause your porcelain cladding to look worse for wear, but they can also affect its integrity.

So, here we will tell you everything that you need to know about repairing porcelain cladding to help get your home to look in top condition.

Identify the problem

There are many reasons why your porcelain cladding may be breaking. These can be extreme heat, incorrect installation, or even too much weight (causing stress on the tile).

If you are able to identify why your porcelain cladding is breaking then you can stop it from happening again in the future. This can save you a lot of time, money and effort in the long run.

Identify the repair

After you have worked out why your cladding is breaking you will need to know the problem that needs repair. This can be a chip, crack or even a missing part of a tile. Knowing exactly what you have to deal with will help you to know which steps to follow next.

Repairing the porcelain cladding

Follow the steps for the relevant issue.

Minor cracks

Even if the crack is not visible it is still important that you repair it as this can become a bigger problem over time.

1. Clean the tile using a damp cloth and cleaning solution.
2. Allow the tile to completely dry.
3. Apply epoxy to the affected area, letting it seep down into the crack.
4. Allow the epoxy to dry.
5. Use a knife to remove any excess.
6. Paint the area to match the rest of the tile.

Large cracks

If the crack in your cladding is large enough that it cannot be repaired using the method detailed above then it is worth replacing that panel completely. When you replace an entire tile you should be careful not to damage those surround it.

1. Scrape the grout off from around the affected tile.
2. Cover the damaged tile with a towel and hit it hard in the centre with a hammer.
3. Remove the smashed parts of the tile and chip away at any remaining pieces.
4. Use adhesive and attached the new tile to the area. Make sure to line it up correctly with the rest of the tiles.
5. Grout around the new area, wiping away any excess.

To sum up

Unfortunately, it is not heard of for your porcelain cladding to become damaged or even broken. However, you will not need to completely redo the whole area.

Instead, you can simply repair or replace the broken tile.

You should take care when fixing the affected area as you do not want to ruin the surrounding area and end up with a much bigger job than you started with.

If you can, identify the root cause of the problem and this can save you a lot of hassle in the future.
