Can You Paint Porcelain Cladding?

The process of painting porcelain cladding is pretty easy. The process includes cleaning the porcelain, sanding the porcelain, applying primer, and finally painting.

How to Paint Porcelain Cladding

The process of painting porcelain cladding is pretty easy. The process includes cleaning the porcelain, sanding the porcelain, applying primer, and finally painting.

Clean the Porcelain

The first step of painting your porcelain cladding is to clean the surface. You can use a pressure washer to get the job done quickly and efficiently. The cleaning product you choose will depend on how dirty the cladding is.

If you just have some general dirt, regular washing soap should do the trick. If there is algae growing on the porcelain, you will need to use a more intensive cleaner. After you have the cladding clean, you need to wait for it to dry before continuing.

Sand the Porcelain

The best way to sand the porcelain cladding on your house is with a belt sander. If you don’t own one, you can rent one from a hardware or a home improvement store. Use the sander to lightly rough up the surface of the porcelain.

When you have sanded the entire surface, you will need to clean up the dust and debris from the surface. You can do this easily with a ShopVac and follow up with a damp towel to ensure you get all the debris. Give the cladding some time to dry before applying the primer.

Apply the Primer

Now that your porcelain cladding is prepped, you need to apply a primer to the surface. This will help the paint adhere properly to the porcelain and prevent damage in the future. You can apply the primer with a roller or try to find a spray primer to complete the job faster. Apply in thin, even layers.

After you apply the first layer of primer, let it dry for a few hours. When the first layer is dry, you can add a second layer of primer to ensure that you’ve covered the entire surface of the cladding. Let this layer dry for about eight hours.

Paint the Porcelain

After you have given the primer plenty of time to dry, you can start applying the paint to the cladding. The best paint to use is an exterior ceramic paint, but you will also have good results with a tile or brick paint.
Apply the first coat of paint in thin, even layers with long strokes. Let the first layer dry before you attempt to apply the second layer. Two layers should be all you need, but if you feel like you need more coverage you can add a third layer.

The exterior paint has a built-in sealer, so you don’t need to worry about sealing the exterior paint when you are finished.
