How much does GRC cost?

GRC, when compared to virtually every other form of concrete or cement, is far and away the superior choice in nearly every category. GRC (Glass Fibre Reinforced Concrete) is lighter than traditional forms of concrete, more flexible and more durable as well.

This makes the material considerably more versatile and customizable than other forms of stone, cement, or concrete. It can be used as both a structural element (namely in building foundations and stressed pillars) as well as non-structural elements, such as cladding or pipes.

Yes, there is admittedly very little this form of concrete can’t do for virtually any building structure.

Still, one thing many people wonder is, “How much does it cost?”. After all, one would expect that a material that is as versatile, lightweight, and as durable as GRC would certainly be at least several times more expensive than traditional forms of concrete, right?

Well, thankfully GRC wins in this department as well. Not only does it host the litany of advantages listed before, but it is also a cheaper alternative than concrete as well!

How and why is this possible? It comes down to two primary factors. The first is the cost for transport and shipping. The second is based around the speed of installation.

Cost of Transport

While people often think of the cost of the concrete itself, very few actually consider and take into account the price of transport and shipping. For standard concrete, it can cost, on average roughly £50 per sqm. This means for a full 10-metre load, on top of the regular pricing, a person would have to pay an additional £500. For that same price, GRC can often be shipped at double the amount.

This is due largely because of the weight disparity between the two materials. While traditional concrete must be dense and heavy enough to maintain its durability, GRC’s glass fibres greatly offset much of that weight requirement while actually acting as a much more durable material. This ultimately results in something that is easier to transport at a much more affordable rate.

Speed of Installation

As with transport cost, installation costs are often not thought of until the time of actual instalment for many people. These costs can be quite steep from company to company. This means that, in addition to the price of the materials and the transport costs, you’d also be paying additional installation fees as most other materials are more time consuming and complex to install than GRC cladding is.

Because GRC is many times lighter and easier to handle than other materials, those costs can easily be halved or quartered, more than making up for the higher initial cost of the materials.

Conclusion

While “pound for pound”, GRC may be on par with other materials, that isn’t the end of the story. When you factor in and consider the material’s transport cost as well as installation fees, GRC actually comes out as being a cheaper and more affordable material in addition to its many other benefits.
