GRC Cladding Colours?

Because GRC cladding is so incredibly varied and flexible in its use, many individuals decide to use it as cladding for their wall surfaces. In these instances, one may opt to have it coloured differently from the standard greyish material that is often associated with cement, stone, and concrete.

GRC, unlike standard concrete, in addition to its many other advantages, can actually be premade alternative colours based on the specific design of the consumer or manufacturer. In this overview of GRC and its ability to retain colours, we will go over the different options for colouring GRC and what that will mean for any project using it including the ranges, the colours and textures involved with it.

Painted Surface

The first method used for colouring GRC is through Surface Painting. This method is, for many a relatively simple option and has some advantages through extended customization. The Surface Painting method is largely performed by way of painting the surface of an already established piece of GRC wall cladding. This can be done by the individual themselves, a painting contractor, or by the specific manufacturing company. If performed professionally, Surface Painted GRC will often be treated with an appropriate mould in order to protect the paint colors.

While there are several advantages to this method, particularly in having stronger and more vibrant finishes as well as numerous options for customization throughout the lifespan of the GRC panel, it is actually not the preferred method of colouring. This is largely due to the fact that the extra step of treating the surface is required in order to have the intended colour or design.

Coloured GRC

Also known as “Coloured-through” GRC, Coloured GRC is the method by which, during the mixing process, the GRC is infused with either a powdered or water-based pigment colour in order to alter the finished concrete version’s appearance. The advantages of this method largely surround the fact that the colouring process is prematurely established while also having a much more natural and organic appearance to the material. Because all of this takes place during the mixing process, many customers and manufacturers alike prefer this method.

The downsides and disadvantages that come from using the coloured-through method are that it may be difficult to accurately predict new or original colours for the final hardened GRC. Similarly, if one wishes to change it later, the process is considerably more difficult. As a result, both methods have their pros and cons and should be considered before making a decision.

Conclusion

GRC has a number of different advantages that make it far and away a superior option when compared to standard concrete. If you are looking to add customized looks or creative designs, to your home or property, using coloured GRC is the optimal choice in every way.
